NORTHERN ONTARIO WELDING COLLEGE
CLOSES
May 2, 2011
After almost ten years in operation
and graduating 2,000+ qualified welders, Northern Ontario
Welding College Inc. closed its doors effective May
2, 2011 with the owners retiring. The decision was not
an easy one for owners Bill Mandris and Gail McCallum
as they saw the continuing need for welder training
and testing and know industry requires qualified welders.
Due to the current Provincial Liberal Government policies
regarding training along with increasing red tape, costs
for electricity, heating, gas, and government fees,
they were unable to continue to offer their training
services at a reasonable cost to students. Private Career
Colleges are owned and operated as private businesses
at no cost to the taxpayers whereby Community Colleges
are heavily subsidized by taxpayers. Private Career
Colleges offer the advantage of training that is mainly
hands-on, flexible, low student:instructor ratio with
students graduating with the qualifications employers
require.
For the many unemployed in Central/Northern
Ontario who want a career as a welder and were seeking
welder training and qualifications at our facility,
we are sorry to be closed. For our many graduates we
thank you for being part of our history and memories.
The biggest reward for our college staff has been when
former students dropped in or telephoned and brought
us up to date on their personal successes in the welding
industry and there have been many. Our graduates are
all over Canada, some in the U.S.A. and some international.
Whether you are pursuing training at
a Private Career College or a Community College, we
suggest that you visit the website for the Association
of Registered Private Welding Career Colleges of Ontario
– www.weldingschoolsofontario.com
This site lists the locations in Ontario of other Private
Welding Career Colleges. It also offers a list of questions
(Dare to Compare) you should ask when investigating
a college to determine if you are getting the best possible
training available for your money and that you will
graduate with proper qualifications.
There will be an auction sale
of equipment and materials on Thursday, May 26, 2011.

Thank you,
Bill Mandris, Gail McCallum and staff
